Montenegrin cuisine is delicious! So be warned—if you’re not in Budva for an active vacation, you might return home with a few extra pounds! This selection of the best traditional food restaurants in Budva will certainly not help you with weight loss, but it will sure make your life more beautiful!
Most restaurants offer at least a few Montenegrin specialties such as Njeguški pršut (a famous dry-smoked pork), or slow-cooked veal under the bell (sač). However, some traditional food restaurants in Budva truly master Montenegrin cuisine and pride themselves on outstanding service.
As foodies who love and appreciate great food, here are our top picks:
1. Merkur – No.1 Traditional Food Restaurant in Budva
If you’re after the best of Montenegrin traditional cuisine, Merkur is the place to be. It’s because every dish is incredibly delicious, and the experience feels truly authentic!
This is the only spot in Budva (as far as we know) where you can find raštan—a cabbage-like leafy green cooked with smoked meat. It is definitively the most traditional Montenegrin dish (and my personal favorite!). Other must-tries include veal, lamb, and kid goat cooked under the bell, veal soup, and domestic cheese. Also, kačamak—a creamy, vegetarian dish made from potatoes, cheese, and kajmak (a type of rich cream cheese).
What will surprise you is the high quality and incredible taste, especially given the location: right at the main bus station! But don’t be fooled—Budva’s bus station is unlike any other. It’s surrounded by lush greenery and even featuring a mini zoo. This makes Merkur a perfect fit for a delightful dining experience.
2. Farma Carević – High Class Experience
If you’re looking for a more immersive experience that combines delicious traditional food with a picturesque setting and stunning sea views, Farma Carević is the place to go.
Located on a farm, the restaurant sources its ingredients from locally raised Mangalica pork (the most delicious breed!. They also offer locally grown beef, veal, lamb, and chicken. The large space allows some animals to roam freely in fenced areas, which is a hit with kids. If you’re visiting with little ones, be sure to check out the big playground at the back of the restaurant.
For a more tranquil experience, head to the front part of the restaurant where you’ll be treated to breathtaking sea views. There, you can enjoy local wines and savor the dishes made from fresh, farm-grown ingredients. Our top recommendation? The roast Mangalica pork—it’s a must-try!
After your meal, take a peaceful stroll along the promenade by the sea to round off your visit.
Keep in mind that Farma Carević is located in Krimovica, near Jaz and Trsteno beaches, so you’ll need a car or a taxi to get there.
3. Kuzina – Local Hidden Gem
For a more budget-friendly and time-efficient traditional food restaurant in Budva, opt for Kuzina. It is the place to enjoy traditional Montenegrin food without breaking the bank. This cozy spot offers high-quality dishes at very affordable prices.
We highly recommend their ready-made traditional meals like veal soup, goulash, sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), meatballs in tomato sauce, and veal under the bell. Always ask the waiter about the daily specials to make the best choice! Also, they serve a great selection of grilled meats—don’t miss the Njeguški steak.
The restaurant is conveniently located in a residential area of Budva, just a short walk from most parts of the city, making it a perfect stop if you’re staying nearby.
